And
this is what we believe...
“This is the message you have heard from the beginning: We should
love one another”. 1 John 3:11
We love this verse because we believe this is where you can find the
message of the Bible simplified into one
verse. This is the message you have heard from the beginning: We should
love one another. This is the oldest commandment and it is also the
newest commandment. In John 13:34 Jesus says: “A new command
I give to
you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another".
Jesus adds to the message by
saying we should love one another as He has loved us.
It
is so simple, and that is the basis of why it feels so true. So how
do we love one another in the
same way that God love us?
"As
the father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love.
If you obey my commands you will
remain in my love” “My command is this: Love each other
as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than
this that he lay down his life for his friends”. “This
is my command: love one another” 1 John 3:7-21. So the
Bible is really talking about two basic commands. The first Love God,
and the second is equal to the first: Love people. By loving people
we are loving God. It really can’t get more simple than that.
1 John 3:16 also defines
love as this: “Jesus laid down His life for us. And we ought
to lay down our lives for our brothers. If anyone has material possessions
and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love
of God be in him?
Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions
and in truth”.
Sin is sin and
we are all sinners
We
believe that as humans we are all born into sin. God did not command
us to be judges of each other sins.
When the “church” was ready to throw stones at the adulterous
woman Jesus said to them: "If any one of
you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her”
John 8:7. Our purpose is to love each other
despite our own sin and despite our friend’s sin. We also believe
there is a hope to overcome our past sins:
”the scriptures have declared that we are all prisoners of sin,
so that the only way to receive God’s promises
is to believe in Jesus Christ” Galatians 3:22. By believing
in God and asking for forgiveness we can be free of
past sins, this does not mean that we will continue not to sin-we
are all human. ”For all have sinned and
fallen short of the glory of God and are justified freely from grace
through the redemption that came by Jesus Christ”. Romans 3:23.
God
does not come with the purpose to condemn. After the “church”
had heard Jesus words concerning the adulterer they dropped the stones
and they walked away. Jesus said to the woman “Woman, where
are they?
Has no one condemned you?” “No one, Sir”, she replied.
“Then neither do I condemn you”, Jesus declared. “Go
now and leave your life of sin” John 3:17 also states “God
did not send his Son into the world to condemn the
world but to save the world through him”. We believe that Jesus
did not come to condemn the world; we also believe that it is not
the church’s job to condemn the world either. God will work
on the heart, our purpose is
to love one another.
Jesus
loved the “condemned of society”. John 4 perfectly illustrates
this as Jesus vocally reveals that He is the Messiah for the first
time to the most outcast of that society: a prostitute. Not only was
it considered wrong
for a Jew to be talking to a gentile woman, but for a man to be talking
to a known prostitute would be considered way out of line. Once again
we find truth in the life of Christ by the way he completely disregarded
the “rules of
the church” and loved the outcast.
Everyone has a
purpose. Everyone has value.
"O
LORD , you have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit and
when I rise; you perceive my
thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you
are familiar with all my ways. Before a
word is on my tongue you know it completely, O LORD. You hem me in-behind
and before; you have laid your
hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for
me to attain. Where can I go from your
Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens,
you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I
rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the
sea, even there your
hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast. If I say, "Surely
the darkness will hide me and the light
become night around me," even the darkness will not be dark to
you; the night will shine like the day, for
darkness is as light to you. For you created my inmost being; you
knit me together in my mother's womb. I
praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works
are wonderful, I know that full well. My
frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place.
When I was woven together in the
depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days
ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came
to be. How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the
sum of them!
Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand. When
I awake, I am still with you.” Psalm
139:1-16.
We
believe that God has given everyone a unique calling in life. Brenda
and I believe part of our calling is to
assist and work with full time missionaries. In the same way we believe
God has called many people to have
full time careers in America.
We
believe God puts the highest value on human life. God has made everyone
unique and that everyone has
value. “Indeed the very hairs of your head are all numbered”
Luke 12:7.
"Every problem
in the world is a problem of relationship” –Dean Sherman
We
realize that narrowing down every problem in the world to one problem
appears to be over simplifying things
a bit. One category, one problem. However, We really do believe that
virtually every problem or conflict in the
world is rooted in a problem with relationship. This includes: economic,
political, marriage, church, poverty, starvation, etc. This brings
us back to the commandment and the solution to problems of relationship:
Love
one another. Our journey is to learn how to best love one another.
Relationship has to be the number one
priority of a Christian life. If we can not relate with each other
then we are part of the problem. We also agree
with Dean Sherman when he says “The Church has a 2,000 year
bad habit of not making relationship a priority. Christian’s
have burned people at the stake in the name of Jesus, now we just
tear people down through other means"
When
we embrace the words and actions of Christ it is then that the world
will see He is real. "By this all men
will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another”
John 13:35.
